Past Projects

Prototype Hybrid Tug - Dolphin Class Tug Boat

Contract with Foss Maritime Company - Seattle, Spring 2007
AKA, in collaboration with their Hybrid Technology partner, XeroPoint Energy, was contracted by Foss Maritime to provide the propulsion and control systems for the world’s first hybrid tug. The project incorporates a combination of diesel engines, electric motors, generators, electrical storage, modern power conversion techniques and control technology to produce a system cable of significantly reducing emissions and fuel costs. One of the key technological advances of this project is the power management system. It is capable of choosing the most efficient combination of power inputs to match the required propulsion and auxiliary needs at a given point in time.

Sedco 706 - Transocean DP2 Class Semi-submersible

Contract with Siemens Oil and Gas - Fall 2007/ Winter 2008
AKA was sub-contracted by Siemens Oil and Gas to provide our AGP system, the 125VDC UPS and Monitoring System for the 11kV Main Switchboard, Thruster PLC, CAT Panels, and SIPLINK controllers, essentially handling the entire Siemens electrical work scope (similar to that commissioned for the Sedco 702).

JOIDES Resolution - Transocean Ocean Drilling Vessel

Contract with Siemens Oil and Gas - Summer 2007
AKA was sub-contracted to provide a technical overview of the throttle control system for the Joides
Resolution as well as install and commission the upgrade. The automation component of the system utilizes Siemens S7 300 and 400 hardware.

Discoverer 534 - Transocean DP2 Class Drill Ship

Contract with Transocean – Singapore, Spring 2007
AKA completely changed out and upgraded the control section of the MV SWBD including addition of the Advanced Generator Protection system, AKA’s InnoVision Supervisory PLC and HMI, upgraded speed control application and expanded protection relay functions (including Quik Trip). In addition to AGP, AKA also provided a 125 VDC redundant power supply and monitoring system. AKA also delivered new diesel controls for the existing EMD diesels, a BOP Monitoring System, several other subsea control upgrades as well as a BOP Redundant UPS. AKA resources managed and executed all associated work.

Sedco 702 - Transocean DP2 Class Semi-submersible

Contract with Siemens Oil and Gas - Singapore, Winter 2007 - Fall 2008
AKA was subcontracted by Siemens Oil & Gas to provide the AKA Advanced Generator Protection system, AKA’s InnoVision Supervisory PLC and HMI, Redundant Power Supply and Monitoring System, deviceTRAK and the entire documentation package for the rig power system, propulsion drives and drilling SCR system. AKA provided a completely new speed control application for the Woodward 2301D HW based on the now mature design of the AGP and the SWBD controls. AKA was a key player in the concept development and engineering of Transocean’s new propulsion system and high reliability power plant design for this class of vessel. AKA provided services to develop and execute an extensive test plan of the vessel MV SWBD at the factory. AKA was contracted to provide installation and commissioning services on the S702 for the power and propulsion system, as well as provide the on site management of this activity.

Sedco Energy - Transocean 5th Generation Semi-submersible

Contract with Transocean – Fall 2005
AKA upgraded the generator controls to provide the Advanced Generator Protection system, upgraded the speed control application and expanded the protection relay functions (including Quik Trip). In addition to AGP, AKA also provided a redundant DC power system and power supply monitoring system. Both systems utilize an HMI developed by AKA to provide extensive data logging, alarm and operator interface. AKA also installed their programmable device management system, deviceTRAK, on the vessel during this period. In 2006, AKA assisted in the development and installed an anchor winch tree handling system, supplied a Vertical Reference Sensor for active heave compensation, and implemented a data interface for data collection.

CCGS Limnos - Canadian Research Vessel Life Extension Project

Contract with Canadian Coast Guard – Burlington, Canada, 2003
AKA conducted a Vessel Life Extension Feasibility Study for this 30-year-old vessel. We provided an options analysis package offering the client a number of potential configuration scenarios, including
budgetary estimates from both a capitol investment and life cycle perspective as well as a methodology of execution. We created a detailed performance specification for distribution to potential vendors for quotation purposes.
